Home cleaning in a dense city with dry summers and damp winters
Craiova has the pace of a large city, but there are clear differences between compact apartment districts and houses on the edge of town. At the 1 December 2021 census, the municipality had 234,140 resident inhabitants, which means many homes used every day, busy kitchens, bathrooms with fast limescale build-up, and hallways where street dust is carried indoors constantly.
The local climate calls for practical cleaning. The city profile lists an annual average temperature of 10.8°C, a July average of 22.5°C, and relative humidity rising towards 90% in December and January, according to the data on Craiova’s climate potential. In summer, dust shows on insect screens, window sills and upholstery; in winter, cooking smells, bathroom moisture and wet shoe marks on tiles become noticeable much faster.
From student studios to houses with gardens: what gets dirty differently
In Brazda lui Novac, Rovine, Craiovița Nouă, 1 Mai, Valea Roșie, Lăpuș-Argeș or Calea București, many homes are apartments in blocks with moderate usable space. There, maintenance cleaning usually focuses on the kitchen, bathroom, floors, fine dust on furniture and tight areas around radiators. In the centre or close to the universities, rented homes more often need move-in and move-out cleaning, especially at the beginning and end of a lease.
- Older apartment blocksDust gathers in grout lines, on door frames, behind appliances and around older window frames, especially after small repair jobs.
- Homes close to main roadsTraffic on busy arteries leaves marks on windows, curtains, insect screens and sills, while upholstery vacuuming becomes more useful than it first appears.
- Houses in airier areasGardens, terraces and entrances bring mud, leaves, pollen and sand into hallways, so cleaning needs to start at the access points.
For a home used every day, home cleaning covers the mix of surfaces, fabrics, bathroom, kitchen and visible details without turning every appointment into a full deep clean.
The real calendar of dust, pollen and rentals
In Craiova, cleaning demand is not the same every month. Spring brings pollen, dry grit and spotted windows after short rains. In summer, higher temperatures highlight smells from the fridge, oven and bin, while daily-use sofas collect dust faster. In autumn, tenants change, students return, and apartments left empty need quick cleaning before the next move-in.
- March–May This is the right period for windows, insect screens, cupboards, fabrics and older bathroom deposits, before summer dust settles on every surface.
- June–August In homes without good shading, kitchens and upholstery need attention more often; sofas, mattresses and rugs hold sweat, dust and odours.
- September–October Student and family moves bring quick cleaning between tenants, bathroom checks, fridge hygiene and thorough floor washing.
- November–January Humidity, guests, holiday cooking and wet shoes shift the focus to the hallway, bathroom, kitchen, oven and fabrics.
The city’s events are felt inside apartments too
Craiova has clear peaks of activity. The University of Craiova mentions more than 31,000 students, and this shows in studios, two-room apartments and rentals near the centre, 1 Mai, Valea Roșie or Calea București. At the start of a semester, practical cleaning matters most: a sanitised bathroom, clean fridge, usable oven, wiped cupboards and floors without renovation or moving traces.
In winter, the Christmas Market changes the rhythm of the central area. The 15 November 2024 – 5 January 2025 edition attracted more than two million visitors, according to data cited from the municipality. Apartments used by relatives, guests or short-stay tenants then need bathrooms refreshed quickly, linen changed, floors washed and kitchens free from built-up grease.
Urban dust, windows and surfaces people notice first
Air quality matters directly inside the home. The World Bank document on integrated urban development uses data from the 2020–2024 Air Quality Plan and mentions PM10 and NO2 monitoring through stations in the Craiova area, including urban and suburban points, in its analysis of pollution and air quality. Indoors, this becomes fine dust on shelves, loaded air-conditioner filters, grey curtains and windows that look dirty only a few days after rain.
In apartments near heavy traffic, window cleaning has a visible effect, but it works best when paired with wiping frames, vacuuming tracks and cleaning insect screens. In homes where cooking is frequent, the oven, extractor hood, wall tiles and worktop need a better rhythm than the bedroom or enclosed balcony.
A useful booking follows the home’s rhythm, not a rigid checklist
A family in Rovine with two children, a rented studio near the centre and a house towards Mofleni do not need the same setup, even if all of them fall under professional cleaning services. The difference comes from the number of residents, floor level, traffic, pets, textile surfaces, window type, how often people cook and whether the home has recently been renovated.
For a full clean after works, fine dust needs to be removed from sockets, skirting boards, doors, grout lines, radiators and furniture edges, not only from the floor; that is why, after painting or tile replacement, after-builders cleaning follows a different logic from a weekly visit. When booking, the number of rooms, bathrooms, balconies, textile surfaces and extra tasks can be listed so the allocated time matches the real Craiova home.
